New Eurovision?

Toine Manders, a Dutch Libertarian politician and member of the European Parliament is already working for the last six months to create a new E.U. song contest within the borders of the European Community.
Manders idea, which received lots of positive reactions from EU parliament colleague members is to create a new festival that will be taking place every year on the 9th of May when all European countries celebrate the “Day of Europe”.
The annual song contest is about to include all the 27 European countries. The first show, if all comes to a happy end, is about to take place in 2008 with a real jury and with a real orchestra.
If a real jury and orchestra will be used for the new EU festival and if Manders succeeds then we may see Italy back in the new contest because one of the reasons that Italy left from the Eurovision Song Contest was the televoting process.
Manders, is already under discussion with several European TV channels. Specifically, on Friday he will have a meeting with RTL, the European TV channel which broadcasts in 19 of the 27 EU countries and has already expressed its interest about his idea. Next week he also has an appointment with the European Commissioner of communication Margot Wallstrom.Manders is also working on another idea, to organize an annual EU soccer event.

Cyprus to host the Junior Eurovision 2008

CYPRUS may not be able to get into the Eurovision Song Contest of late, but CyBC has won the bid to host the Junior Eurovision next year, it emerged yesterday.

The Steering Group of the Junior Eurovision announced yesterday that it had accepted the Cypriot offer to host the 2008 song contest, choosing Cyprus from four countries that had put in an offer.

The location for Junior Eurovision 2008 will be Limassol, but the venue itself has not been announced. Cyprus has been participating in the contest since 2003, but in 2005 the Cypriot song was withdrawn amid accusations of plagiarism.

The final choice for 2008 was between Ukraine and Cyprus. “We received some high-quality proposals for next year's 6th Junior Eurovision Song Contest and after long consideration, the Steering Group decided to award the honour of hosting next year's competition to CyBC,” said Steve Deconink-de Boeck, the president of the steering committee.

Junior Eurovision takes place in December, and unlike the Eurovision, it doesn't have to take place in the country that wins the contest. This is to minimise pressure on the young contestants aged between eight and 15.

This year, the 5th Junior Eurovision will take place in Rotterdam.

Last year, only 15 countries competed in the competition and since 2005 four countries have withdrawn. The largest number that ever participated was 23. The European Broadcasting Union has promised that the contest will continue until 2007, but has not made any promises for 2008, despite having chosen a host country.

Many countries criticise the show given the pressure it puts on the young children and teens involved.

This year, 18 countries will take part, including debuts from Armenia, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Lithuania.

Just as with the Eurovision itself, in every Junior contest so far Cyprus has given its 12 points to Greece.

Malta: more complaints over the Eurovision voting

The head of the Maltese delegation to the Eurovision Song Contest, Robert Abela, has called for some televotes to be scrapped, according to reports on the BBC’s news website. Abela, who’s long been associated with Malta in Eurovision, has said he thinks many results were “not based solely on the public vote”, and said a number of other countries were angered by the perceived block voting. In interesting developments, Mr Abela has said he received reports indicating how many points Malta would get from certain countries even before the finals. “If the EBU cannot 100% monitor how the system is being done in some of the ex-Soviet countries I think they should do away with phone voting” he’s claimed.

The EBU have so far not commented on Mr Abela’s claims.

So it seems the debate about political/neighbourly/diaspora/block voting just won’t go away, whatever people’s views on the matter. Some people may want to sweep it under the carpet or see it as a bit of fuss over nothing, but it seems likely to rumble on for a while to come unless changes one way or another are made. Let’s hope for a positive outcome all round!

Cyprus: CyBC confirms participation in the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest

Despite the rumours on Cyprus withdrawal after the failure of Evridiki to proceed to the 52nd Eurovision Song Contest Final, CyBC executive Mr Mavrikios, director and producer Mr Kleitou, TV hosts Ms Papamichael, Ms Komninou assured tonight during a special TV show for Eurovision outcome, that Cyprus has no intention to withdraw from the Eurovision Song Contest. The panel guests of course discussed the issue occured with the daispora and neighbour voting but they also informed the Cypriot public that there are gains from participating:

CyBC made a financial ballance between expenses and incomes, Cyprus was well advertised in Europe. The future participation for Cyprus will be decided next fall (national or internal selection). In the case of internal selection those interested to represent Cyprus (locals or from other European nations) have to submit a complete proposal for their entry and not just a song. The importance of sponsoring was also emphasised in the show, urging local and international companies to forsee gains by helping the Cyprus Public Television.

Greece: ERT begin quest for a Junior song entry

Greek national broadcaster issued a press release opening the national selection for the search of the national entry in the 2007 Junior Eurovision Song Contest which will take place on Dcember 8th in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The deadline for song submissions is set for June 29. As usual a preliminary jury will select a number of songs which will be performed later on live on a TV show and the Greek public will decide the winner.

Μανούλα, ο κόσμος έχει χάσει την αισθητική του. Από τα όμορφα και καλαίσθητα γραφικά, καταλήξαμε, πάλι, στα τριτοκοσμικά, δισδιάστατα, άχαρα και λίγων χρωματικών συνδυασμών γραφικά. Φέτος, στην ανακοίνωση των αποτελεσμάτων ανά χώρα, μια ροζ-φουξ καρδούλα πρόσθετε τους ανάλογους βαθμούς στην εκάστοτε χώρα. Ευτυχώς, τα σκηνικά ήταν υπέροχα. Εκεί να δεις χρώματα και σχέδια! Αλλά, βρε μανούλα, γιατί βασιλεύει το κιτς σε αυτόν τον κόσμο; Τι ήταν αυτή η σκηνική παρουσία του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου, για παράδειγμα, με τις αεροσυνοδούς του 1970 και τα αεροπλανάκια; Αμ, το άλλο; με τη στάση του λεωφορείου; Για να μην αναφέρω ένα μανουάλι που είχαν, τραγουδώντας για βαμπίρ, κάτι άλλοι... Ευτυχώς, οι τελευταίοι δεν πέρασαν στον τελικό. Το Ην. Βασίλειο, όμως; Που πήρε χαμηλή βαθμολογία αλλά είναι στις “μεγάλες δυνάμεις” και θα είναι και του χρόνου στον τελικό; Δεν είναι αδικία; Γιατί, δηλαδή; Η Κύπρος μας που ήταν καλύτερη από αυτούς, πώς μένει στην απ' έξω και πρέπει να περάσει από ημιτελικό, του χρόνου;

Επίσης, ένας από τους λίγους που δεν έλεγε “twelve points GOES to” αλλά το σωστό “twelve points GO to”.

By the way, καλή φάση με τις κορδέλες.

Μανούλα, να κάνω μια ερώτηση; Γιατί η Ε.Ρ.Τ. έδιωξε την Μπόκοτα; ΟΚ, αφού ήθελε, καλά έκανε και την έδιωξε. Γιατί, όμως, δεν κράτησε και για φέτος το δίδυμο Μακρυπούλια - Καπουτζίδη; Τους νοστάλγησα, ακούγοντας Μπακοδήμου – Σεργουλόπουλο. Καμία σχέση το πέρυσι με το φέτος. Τι να σου λέω, τώρα... Να συγκρίνω το Pardalos show, στο Αθηνών Αρένα με τη μίμηση της Γαρμπή που έκανε η Μακρυπούλια (γενικά τις μιμήσεις που έκαναν και εκείνη και ο Καπουτζίδης); Να συγκρίνω το επίπεδο σχολιασμού του ενός ζεύγους (που ο Καπουτζίδης ήξερε πολύ καλά από Eurovision, γιατί την παρακολουθεί) με το επίπεδο σχολιασμού του άλλου;

Ρε μαμά, είναι το 60% του κοινού της Eurovision ομοφυλόφιλοι; Έτσι είπε ο Σεργουλόπουλος στον ημιτελικό, όταν βγήκε η συμμετοχή της Δανίας (ναι, τραβεστί ήταν ο τραγουδιστής. Drag queens νομίζω τους λένε αυτούς...). Αν είναι έτσι, να αρχίσω να ψάχνομαι. 60%;! Λες;

United Kingdom: Eurovision reaches the Houses of Parliament

All the talk over the voting at Eurovision just won’t go away….! In the United Kingdom, where people are still discussing Scooch’s disappointing result, Eurovision has now made it into the Houses of Parliament! Liberal Democrat MP Richard Younger-Ross has tabled a motion, and signed by three other MPs, describing the voting as a “joke” and calling on the BBC to insist on changes or withdraw from the contest! Well with Mr Blair soon to be out of a job, maybe he should see if there’s any jobs going in the EBU…

The full text of the motion is as follows…

“That this House believes that voting in the Eurovision Song Contest has become a joke as countries vote largely on narrow nationalistic grounds or for neighbour countries rather than the quality of the song; and that such narrow voting is harmful to the relationship between the peoples of Europe; and calls for the BBC to insist on changes to the voting system or to withdraw from the contest.”

New Eurovision Song Contest for EU member states?
Toine Manders, one of the Dutch members of the European Parliament, is working on an alternative for the Eurovision Song Contest. The new song festival should strengthen the European feeling. Only EU member states will be allowed to take part and songs should be performed in the national language.

Toine Manders gets the support of Henk Krol and former Eurovision Song Contest participant Sandra Reemer. Several investors and television broadcasters would already have shown interest. Manders is currently lobbying for money in the European Parliament. The new EU-Song Contest should strengthen the European feeling. "It will be more clear, cause only EU member states will take part. Now there are countries taking part of which people don't even know where they are. Also the voting procedure will be different and not get out of hand like now," it's said. The results will be decided by televoting and a professional jury.

Did promo tours in Belgium get rewarded with points?

In the last month preceding the Eurovision Song Contest, seven of this year's participants visited Belgium to promote their Eurovision Song Contest entry. Edsilia Rombley (the Netherlands), Evridiki (Cyprus), Hayko (Armenia) and Kenan Doğulu (Turkey) are the ones who also received points from Belgium in the end.

At the end of April, Belgovision.com and 12Points.tv organised a promo tour for Cypriot representative Evridiki and Dutch representative Edsilia Rombley in Belgium, which offered them publicity in different ways. Both Eurovision ladies could count on the Belgian support in the semifinal. Belgium gave 10 points to Edsilia and 5 points to Evridiki. However, that was not sufficient to qualify for the final.

Eurovision Semifinal Results

11 May 2007 00:25:00
As expected, the Eurovision Song Contest semifinal held in Helsinki was full of surprises! Although Hartwall Areena was not fully packed the show was impressive and the audience’s enthusiasm confirmed their love to the institution. The ten countries that got through to the main event on Saturday are the following: Belarus, FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia), Slovenia, Hungary, Georgia, Latvia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey and Moldova. The presentation order is as follows: 01. Bosnia-Herzegovina, 02. Spain, 03 Belarus, 04. Ireland, 05. Finland, 06 FYROM, 07. Slovenia, 08. Hungary, 09. Lithuania, 10. Greece, 11.Georgia, 12. Sweden, 13. France, 14. Latvia, 15. Russia, 16. Germany, 17. Serbia, 18. Ukraine, 19. UK, 20. Rumania, 21. Bulgaria, 22. Turkey, 23. Armenia, 24. Moldova. Unfortunately, Cyprus’ "Comme ci Comme ca" failed to qualify to the finals.

2007 ESC Semifinal

11 May 2007 16:35:00
The Eurovision Song Contest semifinal has left us with mixed feelings, with frustration being the dominant one, as Cyprus did not make it to the big final. Although "Comme ci Comme ca" ranked amongst the favourites, we won’t listen to it again on Saturday night. Evridiki’s performance was electrifying, and the enthusiasm of the audience inside the Hartwall Areena speaks volumes. However, the viewers across Europe thought otherwise. The advance of some outsiders was also a great surprise. Bulgaria’s entry was really powerful and proved the polls that gave it a spot in the final right. Koldum of Belarus was also pretty good and cool on the stage, as if he had not been stressed at all. So he deserved a place in the final. Iceland represented by rock star Eirikur Hauksson made quite an impression. Hauksson was indeed the calm power of the night. His wide experience needed not to be proven. It is a pity he didn’t make it through. The failure of the Swiss "vampires", who were a strong favourite, was also a complete surprise. This year’s ESC was rock-oriented, however, this feeling appears to be reduced to the semifinal only. Another rock entry was that of Croatia’s with Dragonfly. Their song, "I Believe in Love," was good enough and was liked a lot, yet this was not enough to earn them a place in the final. Poland also failed to advance. The Jet Set’s performance was fresh, lively, with the stage filled with beautiful faces inviting us to party. Malta’s entry was pretty good and decent, as well. Olivia Lewis sang "Vertigo" excellently. Mind you that she has long waited to set her foot on the ESC stage, as she had repeatedly tried to represent her country in the Eurovision Song Contest in the past. Another country that booked a ticket to the final and seemed to have enjoyed it is Moldova, which was an outright outsider. Singer Natalia Barbu gave a suberb performance, the stage was filled with violins and the path to the ESC final was wide open. Debutant Georgia stole the limelight advancing to the final, with Sopho singing "Visionary Dream." Words are too poor for Serbia, Marija Serifovic and her song "Molitva" charmed the audience and the viewers who awarded her with a spot in the final. Turkey will also appear in the final on Saturday, as Kenan Dogulu and his song "Shake it up Shekerim" was one of the favourites. Latvia, on the other hand, was not listed among the favourites. Yet, its five tenors singing "Questa Notte" won their place in the final, travelling us to past times. On Friday noon the first dress rehearsal of the final took place, and the second at 2100 hours. With regard to the Greek entry, everything seems to be in place, with Sarbel putting on an outstanding performance.

Comments on the Televoting Problems

11 May 2007 17:13:00
Problems were reported in the Greek televoting, as several votes through sms text messages had a recipient other than the ESC. ERT, the Greek national broadcaster, issued a press release reading that it had zero involvement in the ESC televoting process. It also underlined that the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and Upstream S.A., a company chosen by the EBU to handle this particular section of the contest, were exclusively responsible for the smooth running of the process. The company, on the other hand, blamed the problems reported on the voters’ failure to dial the correct code number.

Evridiki out of Eurovision race(By Jacqueline Theodoulou)

VIEWERS tuning in to tonight’s Eurovision song contest may find themselves looking for another singer to support as local entry Evridiki failed to make the semi-final cut on Thursday night.

Evridiki’s song ‘Comme Ci, Comme Ca’, which was considered a favourite to win the competition in British bookies, was ruled out of the final along with other favourites, such as Switzerland’s DJ Bobo, Belgium’s KMGs and Malta’s Olivia Lewis.

The new finalists are Bulgaria, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Serbia, FYR Macedonia, Hungary, Slovenia, Turkey and Latvia.

Various international media sources yesterday linked the selected entries to the geographical positioning of the countries chosen, suggesting neighbouring countries gave higher marks to each other.

The reaction over the selection of finalists was explosive in Greece yesterday.

The Greek media condemned the fact that Cyprus had failed to make it to the final, some stating that “the blocking of Eastern Europe worked perfectly once again”.

Furthermore, Greek viewers called in live to television shows to complain about the televoting service, which they said was not working on the night of the vote.

Other extremists even called on Greece to boycott next year’s Eurovision contest (provding it doesn’t win).

However, it wasn't all positive comments for Cyprus.

Greek-language newspaper in England, London Greek News, was particularly scathing of Cyprus’ entry: “This was all predicted by the London Greek News despite much of the hype that Cyprus stood a credible chance to win the contest,” the paper wrote yesterday.

Blaming the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation’s (CyBC) failure to promote the song, London Greek News said CyBC was “the wrong organisation to gauge the feeling in Europe, pretty much all of its output is third-rate and its board is composed of ageing men with little or no real grasp of what the importance of public relations are in these types of events”.

DQ not qualified for the final

Doğulu: "nine is my lucky number"

After it was announced that Kenan Doğulu ranked ninth and got to the finals, Kenan Doğulu said: "nine is my lucky number."

Kenan Doğulu was included in the top 10 with his song "Shake it up Şekerim" at the 52nd Eurovision Song Contest held in Helsinki, Finland. Doğulu made a joke: "they announce the most favorite last. That's why they announced Turkey as the 9th finalist." Doğulu said: "nine is one of my lucky numbers, so I am very happy. It was exciting and stressful; however, I always believed that I would make it to finals. The real thing is final. Everything will be better."

Evridiki - Comme Ci, Comme Ça (Eurovision Semi-Final 2007)

Former Eurovision singers Eirikur, Evridiki and Edsilia out

11.05.2007
Former Eurovision singers Eirikur, Evridiki and Edsilia out
Quite a lot surprises at the end of the semifinal of the Eurovision Song Contest 2007; only Eastern European countries managed to qualify for the final! Big favourites like Switzerland with DJ Bobo and Cyprus with Evridiki, but also Edsilia Rombley from the Netherlands didn't qualify for the final.

The cool boys of Anonymous from Andorra, the drag queen from Denmark,... they all have to return home with a disillusion. Eirikur from Iceland, Evridiki from Cyprus and Edsilia Rombley from the Netherlands all took part in the Eurovision Song Contest before and might regret their new attempt.Another remarkable fact is that Poland, one of the big Eastern European countries, once again didn't qualify for the final. The previous years, Poland always finished eleventh in the semifinal. The fact that no single Western European country survived the semifinal will probably result in a lot of discussions about the future of the contest.Belarus, FYR Macedonia, Slovenia, Hungary, newcomer Georgia, Latvia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey and Moldova were the ten qualifiers in the semifinal. Saturday's final promises to be as diverse and as unpredictable as tonight's semifinal. And who knows... the biggest surprise might come at the end of the evening?

Dress rehearsal report

The first dress rehearsal for the Eurovision Song Contest Semifinal has been held today at the Hartwall Arena. The opening act features some snow falling from the ceiling on to a singer who is on the catwalk. The show itself gets started very quickly though with very little talking from the presenters before the first song, and that honour goes to Bulgaria. Elitsa & Stoyan sing ‘‘Voda’’ very well, and the use of the drums works with the performance+ even some in the audience are joining in with the high-pitch screams. The Israeli entry features the words ‘‘Push the Button’’ flashing on screen during the chorus, and again is another vocally good entry. The third entry from Cyprus was well performed by Evridiki whose stage set up was purple and blue. The only thing bad from her point of view is that Belarus’ entry from Koldun performing directly after was brilliant- vocally good (those who thought he couldn’t sing are definitely proved wrong), and the dancers used the stage and props very well.

Coming after an impressive opening four is never easy, but Iceland’s Eirikur made it look so easy. There is nothing special about this performance, just a well-performed song in ‘‘Valentine Lost’’. Next up the debut entrants from Georgia, with Sopho looking a little lost as her red dress blends in with the background; however it’s another strong performance- albeit with the sword fighting still looking a bit out of place. Stevan Faddy for Montenegro uses his three minutes well; again, a no-nonsense performance with just the song being sun and a little bit of playing to the camera. Then came DJ Bobo and the Swiss entry which looked very impressive. Some pyrotechnics were also used, and complimented the dance routine and stage setup. Bobo played to the crowd and really got the atmosphere going in the hall.

Natalia Barbu performed ‘‘Fight’’ very well, but it’s one of many songs using the same yellow (if not red) stage background. The backing singers were also doing some interesting things with tissues which was bizarre. And on to the Netherlands, where Edsilia stood on top of blocks to perform ‘‘On top of the world’’ so she was above all the dancers. Towards the end of the performance there’s a strange bit of dancing by a male, but apart from that it was another smooth entry. The Albanian entry by Frederik Ndoci really is lost at Eurovision. It comes as people are just starting to get a little restless in the arena, and doesn’t do anything in it’s time of stage. Denmark’s DQ got one of the biggest applause in the hall, and the use of pyrotechnics also fitted in well with this performance as well. He was definitely saving his voice in some parts of the song, but it looks very promising.

Then we’re on to Croatia, which again struggles to go anywhere. It might get the Balkan vote, but it does seem rather out of place. The Jet Set sing Poland’s entry with a dace cage on stage, which eventually has pyrotechnics coming off of it (after the dancers are out that is). Marija’s performance for Serbia is faultless and went very big in the hall. She was also saving her voice a bit, but performed exceltently. The only danger with this song is that it appears a bit like Bosnia 2006. The debut entry from the Czech Republic was very well performed, and if rock songs are the way to go then this will do well.

Sabrina for Portugal performed her gentle Latino-style song very well, and amongst all the rock songs it could stand out. The entry from FYR Macedonia does sound very much like the tune we have heard for the last 5 years, but the final refrain in English works well. Karolina definitely has the best legs in the contest! Norway become the second Latino song in nine minutes with Guri’s entry, which is using the costume change from the national final and is performed well. Olivia Lewis for Malta performs in the face of a force nine gale but delivers ‘‘Vertigo’’ confidently.

The gold-painted backing dancers compliment the stage act. Andorra are fast becoming one of the favourites not only in the semifinal, but also for winning the contest itself. The stage looks good with numbers, as well as some good guitar jumps. Hungary in at number 22 are trying to offer a little bit of class to this year’s competition with a well thought out act. Estonia have a very well-polished stage and dance routine, whilst Belgium bring their own style to the contest! Slovenia went big in the hall with their operatic-pop entry which sounded very good. Kenan from Turkey have a confident performance, whilst Austria used the stage very well with the ribbon. Finally Latvia got a large cheer and really looked comfortable and stylish (except the jeans!).

The New Rehearsals

Bosnia-Herzegovina

The Bosnians are the first off today, Maria Sestic is joined on stage by five backing musicians around the back of the stage. At the start of the song the Bosnian flag appears on the visualisation at the front of the stage, and Maria's vocals have been perfect in every run-through of the song so far. Some dry ice comes on the backing singers walk forward (a la ''Lejla'') and some strange arm movements are going on with the four backing singers/dancers. The instrumental part of the song is sounding very strong, there's a wind machine, and the obligatory Eurovision ukelele.

Spain

The boys are all in white t-shirts with ''Spain'' across their pecs, and some fetching white tracksuit bottoms- the kind Vikki Pollard would be proud of! At the back of the stage are two dancers who make it look like they're banging percussion drums, however they've yet to make contact with them. D'NASH's dance routine looks well-polished, and the stage is covered in yellow and gold. Any doubts about their vocal quality should be quashed immediately, but there were some technical problems with the sound in the hall.

Ireland

Dervish line up with Kathy at the front of the stage, and the five backing instrumentalists around the back playing their various instruments. They're sounding very good, and use a stage of black and orange for their entry ''They cannot stop the spring''. A couple of times the band got lost with the camera angles, but this shout be ironed out and they're looking very accomplished on stage.

Finland

The host country on stage, and getting a good reception from the fans gathered in the hall. The stage is white and blue, but changed to red toards the end of the song. The wind machine is in full swing, together with dry ice pouring out and making it a great atmosphere with a rock song. The vocals are good and, again, another very good-looking performance.

Lithuania

The Lithuanians are using the same background as the national final, with the lead singer of 4Fun at the front, and the backing musicians behind the background in shadow. The vocals seems pretty good so far. Minimalistic but good.

Greece

Sarbel is using the same dance routine as the national final, wearing a silver-grey outfit. His four backing dancers are wearing white ''Madonna Bra'' with skirt complete with blue belts. The stage is the yellow-red, and evidently quite slippery as one of the dancers fell over.

Yassou Helsinki!

Finally arrived in Helsinki! After a flight which seemed too long the Greek delegation arrived in Helsinki on Saturday night. Despite his tiredness, Sarbel is anxious for rehearsals which begin on Monday, May, 7. For countries contesting in the semifinals rehearsals began on May, 3. Countries going directly to the final contest are Bosnia-Erzegovina, Spain, Ireland, Finland, Lithouania, Greece, Sweden, France, Russia, Germany, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, Rumania and Armenia. All is ready for Sarbel rehearsal and his first interview in Helsinki. We wish him "Good Luck".

First rehearsal Ireland

Folk fest: Ireland on stage

The stage background is split into an array of cells by a network of orange lines, like neon stonework, which eases into movement during the extended instrumental break, and waxes and wanes behind the band as they play. The Irish delegation have avoided the clichéd greens of last year's staging.

Easy-going
The band give a very easy-going, laid-back performance, and it works very well on stage - They Can't Stop the Spring has more than a little of the pub performance about it, which, at least today, was emphasised by the casual jacket and trouser look that the band members opted for. Cathy Jordan looks costumed up already, in a folksy black and mustard floor-length dress with hair tied up in a ponytail, playing the bodhrán as she goes. She has a charming performance style; extremely honest and gentle, and this comes across nicely in the hall and on the screen.

There is structure in the performance via a simple routine where the band members follow Cathy around the stage like the Pied Piper of Hamelin, and the easy attitude of the band on stage means that this is not too rigid to spoil the mood.

The finish is dealt with nicely, with the camera pulling out from Cathy to the whole band, as she beats a triumphant last note in the air.

Sopho's big welcome to Europe

The whole Georgian delegation has expressed its huge joy at becoming part of the Eurovision family this year. To show its thanks and introduce a little of Georgia to the other delegations in Helsinki, the doors were opened to artists and journalists alike for the official Georgian party last night.
A sumptuous buffet was laid on for the guests, prepared by "Georgia's most esteemed chef". This included a special section for Georgian national cuisine, which disappeared rather quickly as guests helped themselves. Latvia's Bonaparti.lv were just some of the artists who turned up to show solidarity with fellow Eurovision artists, and tuck into some of the food on offer - complete with top hats and tails!

The party girl
However, most people had come for the chance to see Georgian debutant artist Sopho perform to the guests, and she did not disappoint, with a whole set of songs she sang live to the appreciative international crown at Club Presidentti. She basked in the attention, clearly loving every minute on stage, and gave some strong performances in front of a myriad of flashing cameras. Some of her non-Eurovision tracks include some catchy samba numbers which got the crowd dancing along.

Other attractions at the party included traditional Georgian dancing and a very powerful male part-singing outfit, who raised the roof on stage. As such, the party was a celebration not only of Sopho and the first ever Eurovision entry for the country, but of Georgia, and reflects the pride that Georgians have at being able to showcase their land to the rest of Europe at this event.
